Yard Simulation
Innovative Yard Simulation Optimizer (IYSO) is a planning tool developed to meet railroads’ needs relating to flat and intermodal yards.
Innovative Yard Simulation Optimizer (IYSO) is a discrete-event simulation system that performs a detailed simulation of classification operations of railcars in a yard. It takes as an input the yard’s geometry as a scanned image, blocking plan, train plan, resource availability (crew and locomotives), and simulates the yard operations intelligently, as if an experienced yard manager is handling the yard operations.
IYSO has an optimization-guided simulation engine that is packaged within a desktop-based decision support system. It uses sophisticated decision logic for determining:
the placement of inbound trains on receiving or classification tracks, switching of blocks on tracks, classification of railcars, and train formation by the doubling of blocks and train departures. This engine is packaged within a decision support system. IYSO records and displays all yard events in a real-time animation of railcars, blocks, locomotives and trains on the computer screen. IYSO also creates several reports related to track occupancy and utilization, as well as locomotive and crew utilization.
Potential applications of IYSO include:
determine blocking and car-handling capacities of a yard, assess the impact of train schedule changes on car dwell time and track occupancy in the yard, evaluate the impact of modifying yard layout (adding and removing tracks) on yard congestion, and determine a yard’s operational efficiency as a function of yard resources (crews, locomotives and cranes).IYSO is available to your company for demonstration, pilot studies, or licensing.
